Video captions are required for accessibility. You can add closed-captions to a project by uploading an SRT file or sending the video to our third-party service for captioning.
To make caption files visible for audiences on YouTube or Facebook, you’ll also need to upload them directly to those platforms.
Request closed-captioning
We use a service called Rev to process caption files. They work directly with professional transcriptionists, so the amount of time it takes to generate captions can vary based on file length, audio quality, number of speakers, and order volume.
To request captioning while uploading a video:
- Select Upload and choose the video file.
- Toggle the option for Closed captioning.
- After uploading the video, you’ll see a caption file without a file name linked to the video on the Files page. Once the caption is processed, it will automatically be linked to the project. You can then download, edit, and replace the file as needed.
To request captioning after uploading a file:
- Open the project.
- Select Files.
- Locate the video file.
- In the ellipsis menu, select Send for captioning.
Customer networks can specify an optional job code for the caption order.
Your caption file will show a status of Processing while it’s being created, reviewed, and edited. Vox Media networks receive caption files from Rev within 24 hours; Chorus customers may have other agreements with Rev.
Upload a caption file manually
- Open the video project.
- Select Upload and choose your SRT file.
- Select Next. After the file uploads, you’ll be able to see it on the Files screen. If you uploaded a video file and caption file at the same time, the caption file is automatically linked to the video.
Note: If you uploaded a video file and caption file at the same time, the caption file is automatically linked to the video. If you upload in different sessions, double check that the caption file is attached to the video file on the Files screen.
Link or unlink a caption file
Caption files can be linked to a video to establish a relationship between the two files.
- Open the video project.
- Select Files.
- Locate the caption file and select it to see more details.
- In the Video dropdown, select the file that the caption file belongs to. This will autosave.
- To unlink a caption file from a video, follow these steps but select None.
